@phill: i never said i’m the first person to use Compiz.

@Andrew: it’s an option that can be enabled through Beryl Manager

@zertner: Mae - Futuro(Live)

@Vindicoth: I’ve played WoW through wine, it works nicely. People say that Steam games work through wine, but i haven’t tried it yet, i still play TF2, CoD4, and BF2142 by booting to windows. I play Dota most of the time anyway (WC3/FT custom map) through wine and it works great.

I’d hate to have to spend hours setting it back up.

@cocoa: of course you don’t need that much power for compiz. I have a friend who runs compiz, beryl and emerald on Debian on his Thinkpad, which has an Intel integrated graphics card. That is, he has no dedicated video RAM to speak of, and it runs in real time, videos playing, flame effects, rotating desktop environment, etc.

@Cyrus, you don’t need a crazy system, decent specs will work. try to get an nvidia video card.

@B-Con, Beryl+Compiz Fusion is desktop effects that style window managers demonstrated in the video, not really an “app shown” in the video. I’m pretty sure people already know what it is by now, but added to the list for reference anyway.

@Mark, it’s really easy to set up in Ubuntu, you should try it again, but it’s better with Nvidia video cards, especially with the new (beta) nvidia drivers with GL compositing built in. you don’t have to mess with XGL, AIGLX, etc. i tried all of them and i got the best glxgears score with Nvidia drivers’ composite extensions than the rest by far. and no, it is not built into Gentoo. Gentoo is all about choices.

@GutsyFTW i know i don’t need a 8800gts for compiz my 7300gt works just fine with compiz on freebsd. I mean if you are going to do is watch videos, play with the silly efects of compiz,gimp and all the stuff that was showed in the video you just wasted money.

Kuni said

I’ve got almost all of the same effects running on my laptop actually, it’s so cool, isn’t it?

cocoa - like I said, I run these effects in ubuntu on my laptop, it’s got a GeForce Go 7900GS and is able to run it just fine, my roommate does the same with his laptop running on a GeForce 8600m GS, so it’s not THAT graphics intensive, although it will require a fairly decent card.

Also, Remix - I -LOVE- Mae so much! Futuro was perfect for this video.

Kuni said

Jan 28, 2008 @ 08:55 PM

@Mark

If you’re running Gutsy, all you have to do to set up compiz is, make sure you have the right video car d drivers, then run “sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager” then go to Settings > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Preferences. If you still don’t have anything, try right clicking on your desktop and enabling custom effects.

Distracting stupid chartfunk. Its like Vista, using transparency for transparency sake nowhere else but the window title bar.

Flames? Jello Windows? What purpose does that serve at all, but distract you from doing actual work. It doesn’t even look pretty, but adds to stress. I don’t need my windows burning up or wobbling around.

How about make a real modern GUI where you’re inside a 3D environment, like a 3D shooter, and you can move files and folders around like 3D objects, and decend into them, and organize, and display file contents on the object itself.. something that would actually put a 3D card to use instead of this utter nonsense.

To the existing Compiz users giving Remix a hard time because this is “only Compiz” and “old”, you need to read the other comments and put this in perspective. There are people (many, many people) that have no idea that your OS could do this. They are stuck in the MS mindset and this is absolutely shocking to them. I do demos on my laptop whenever I can and enjoy the jaw-dropping effect every time. I applaud Remix for enlightening the masses and if you are a true Linux fan, so should you. Well done Remix.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 on a compaq presario laptop celeron 1.6ghz with 1 gig of ram and integrated intel graphics and Compiz runs fine with full effects on. The cube, fire, squishy windows, and 3d tabs all work great with NO LAG. Ubuntu runs so much faster than XP pro on the same laptop its crazy.
